About Shreveport Red River Cruises
Starting from 2010, the Spirit of the Red River Cruise is the only tour company based in Shreveport that will provide Red River cruises. This particular company will provide cruises on a regular basis from early March through late November and by appointment in the winter season. While taking a glimpse from the Red River`s scenery, you will also be able to learn about the “great Raft,” an enormous logjam which is believed to have started forming around 1.100 A.D. close to the area where Shreveport-Bossier can be found today.
River cruises offered by the Spirit of the Red will be available each Thursday to Sunday from early March through November, with a wide selection of departure times during the entire day. The last tour will leave in the late afternoon. From early November through late March, the tours will be available only by appointment if the weather conditions will permit it. Cruises will take place in the Red River as well as the twelve-mile Cross Bayou of Shreveport. The hour-long trip will leave from the dock that is situated in the opposite location of the Sci-Port Science Center in Shreveport.
During the Spirit of the Red River Cruise, you will be able to learn about the history of the river as a logging hub along with its transition to the modern economy fueled by the casino industry on board riverboats. You will be able to see some of the nostalgic paddle-wheelers which will now serve as floating casinos. Guests will often spot a lot of wildlife in the wetland habitats of Cross Bayou and Red River, which will host a lot of water snakes, turtles or alligators, and also plenty of bird species like blue herons, white egrets or kingfishers. Along natural sights will sit man-made ones, which will include a few historical bridges: the swing-type KCS and Southwestern Railroad Bridges; the Texas Street Bridge; and the Oil Railroad Swing Bridge.
